Ivan “Bill” Herrett Crowell

Information compiled by Carol Ann McCormick

The University of North Carolina Herbarium has cataloged about a dozen fungal specimens collected by Dr. Ivan “Bill” Herrett Crowell.  All were collected in New Mexico, particularly around the Las Cruces area.  As our collections continue to be cataloged it is possible that more fungi collected by Crowell will be found.  NCU’s macrofungal collections can be searched at  Other herbaria that hold fungal specimens collected by Crowell include FH, ARIZ, NY, BPI, UC, ILL, MICH and TENN.

Ivan Herrett Crowell was born in Caledonia, Queens County, Nova Scotia, Canada on 9 August, 1904.  He taught manual training in Nova Scotia public schools before earning a B.S. in forestry from the University of New Brunswick in 1929, then a Masters degree from Miami University in Oxford Ohio, USA. 1  Crowell continued his biological studies and earned a Masters and Ph.D. from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.  The title of his doctoral thesis was “The cedar-rust fungi, Gymnosporangium juniper-virginianae Schweinitz and Gymnosporangium clavipes Cooke & Peck.” Crowell took a teaching post at Macdonald College of McGill University in Montreal in 1936 and taught botany and handicrafts.

According to Ralph H. Eastey, “Crowell, who liked to work with his hands…became so interested in handicrafts, while at Macdonald College, that he resigned, in 1946, to devote himself full time to handicraft work.”2  In 1946 he moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick to become director of handicrafts for the University of New Brunswick.  He also established the New Brunswick Craft School and served as its director for twenty years.  “In the 1970’s, Dr. Crowell was inspired by Nel Oudemans, an accomplished weaver, to develop his earlier love of another ancient craft, tapestry weaving.  Since then, [Crowell] has woven over 250 tapestries, depicting scenes of New Brunswick history, architecture, local legends, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales.  He generously donated more than 90 tapestries to [University of New Brunswick] including the bicentennial series of UNB buildings, the student residence series, and the heraldic series.” 3

It is as artisan – fiber artist, woodworker, and pewter smith -- that Crowell is best known. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1973, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, and named Distinguished Citizen of Fredericton in 1984.1

Ivan Herrett Crowell died in Fredericton in May, 2003.3
