Lytt Irvine Gardner, Sr.
(b. 1917 d. 1986)

The University of North Carolina Herbarium has catalogued only three fungi collected by Lytt Gardner, though as our collections continue to be catalogued more may be found. Both specimens found thus far were collected in the area around Highlands, Macon County, North Carolina in the summer of 1940. As many Carolina students participated in classes at the Highlands Biological Station during summer, it is possible that Gardner had friends at the Station and visited them.

Lytt Gardner was born in Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. He earned both his B.A. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1938 and 1940 respectively, and was inducted in to Phi Beta Kappa. He attended State University of New York Medical University and practiced as a pediatrician.

Dr. Gardner died on 15 July 1986 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.
