Robert Stanley Leisner
(b. 1927)

The University of North Carolina Herbarium has catalogued over 1,400 vascular plant specimens collected by R. S.Leisner. As more of the collection is catalogued and databased, no doubt more specimens that he collected will be found.

While in North Carolina, Harry Ahles (1924-1981) did not know how to drive an automobile, so was dependent upon colleagues and graduate students to get him to distant field sites in the southeastern United States.  Since collecting trips usually lasted for days or weeks at a time, participants stayed in motels.  It was cheaper for two men to share a room than to pay for two rooms for collectors of different genders.  R.S. Leisner, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was a frequent driver/field assistant/co-collector with Harry Ahles for the “Flora of the Carolinas” project which culminated with the publication of The Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas in 1968 by the University of North Carolina Press.

Leisner earned his Ph.D. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the direction of J.E. Adams in 1958.  His thesis was “Morphology and systematic anatomy of Empetraceae.”

Leisner was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal BioScience in 1965, and by 1970 was the Head of Publications for the American Institute of Biological Sciences in Washington, D.C.
