Homer A. "Steve" Stephens

The following information was compiled by UNC's assitant curator, Carol Ann McCormick.

The UNC Herbarium has databased several dozen specimens collected by Homer A. “Steve” Stephens. No doubt more will be found as the collection continues to be catalogued.

Steve Stephens was the first professional, full-time plant collector hired by the R. L. McGregor Herbarium at the University of Kansas. Between 1966 and 1976, Stephens gathered about 84,000 collection numbers. He collected plants throughout the Great Plains of North America. In fact, a 1975 issue of the Plant Science Bulletin claims that he collected in EVERY county of the Great Plains.
